Empowering Women for Peace and Development in South Asia project works towards increased peace and security in the conflict-ridden areas.

Empowering Women for Peace and Development in South Asia project works towards increased peace and security in the conflict-ridden areas of the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh, North East India and the Shan state of Myanmar. This is done through building alliances with strategic groups, training peace volunteers, creating a fruitful dialogue process between the affected communities and other stakeholders, and raising awareness around women’s participation in peacebuilding processes. Welthungerhilfe has been presently implementing the initiative in partnership with Control Arms Foundation India (CAFI) and Anando Bangladesh.

While collaborating with women’s group, survivor networks, youth networks/alliances, media personnel, peacemakers, academics, researchers and social activists, the EU-supported project will work towards promoting civil society and strengtheningwomen-led peace building initiatives for sustainable peace in South Asia. The initiative aims to reach out to a target group of 500,000 people across the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh, North East India and Shan state of Myanmar, including women, youth, children, and local government representatives.

Key achievements

162 peace groups and 3 networks in India and Bangladesh are mobilised and are active in terms of identifying/ mediating in local incidents, supporting survivors of conflict, disseminating information on rights, and creating dialogue events
220 survivors of conflict have been trained on various livelihood options (such as establishing small business units, poultry farms, banana cultivation, handloom and handicrafts) with 75% of them increasing their income.
100 grassroots leaders trained, supported and linked to national and regional key forums on women’s rights
Modules on peace education developed, successfully piloted in 50 schools, and actively promoted with state and district authorities.
